What's a Bug?

A bug is when the app doesn't work as intended. Examples:

App Crashes

The app closes unexpectedly when you try to do something.

Data Loss

Transactions or data disappears without you deleting them.

Features Not Working

A feature that should work doesn't (e.g., receipt scanning fails, sync doesn't work).

Wrong Calculations

Reports show incorrect totals or calculations.

Display Issues

Text is cut off, buttons are misaligned, or UI looks broken.

Security Issues

Data isn't encrypted, PIN protection fails, or other security problems.

Performance Problems

App is unusually slow, drains battery quickly, or uses excessive storage.

How to Report a Bug Effectively

Step 1: Gather Information

Before reporting, collect details about your device and the bug:

Device Type: Which iPhone model? (e.g., iPhone 14 Pro)
iOS Version: What iOS version? (Settings → General → About)
App Version: What TransactionLog version? (Settings → About App)
When It Happens: Does it happen every time or randomly?

Step 2: Write Steps to Reproduce

This is the most important part. Tell us exactly how to recreate the bug. Numbered steps work best:

Example:
1. Open TransactionLog
2. Tap the "+" button to add transaction
3. Select "Restaurant" category
4. Enter amount: $50
5. Tap "Save"
6. Transaction appears, but amount shows as $5 instead of $50

Step 3: Add Screenshots

Take a screenshot of the bug if possible. A picture is worth 1,000 words! Show us what's broken or what you expected to see.

Step 4: Describe What You Expected

Explain what should happen vs. what actually happens:

What should happen: Amount should save as $50
What actually happens: Amount saves as $5 (last digit is cut off)

Step 5: Note Any Error Messages

If you see an error message, red alert, or crash log, include it in your report. Copy the exact text of the error.

⏱️ Acknowledgment

We'll confirm we received your bug report within 24 hours. If we need more information, we'll ask you.

🔍 Investigation

Our team will try to reproduce the bug on our devices. If we can reproduce it, we mark it as confirmed and prioritize fixing it.

🛠️ Fix

Critical bugs (crashes, data loss) are fixed in the next app update. Less critical bugs go into our product roadmap.

✅ Update

When the fix is released, we'll mention it in the release notes, crediting you if you'd like!

How We Prioritize Bugs

Critical (Fix ASAP): App crashes, data loss, security issues
High (Fix Soon): Core features broken, major features not working
Medium (Fix Next Update): Minor UI issues, edge cases, performance issues
Low (Nice to Fix): Cosmetic issues, rare edge cases

Before You Report...

Try these troubleshooting steps. They often fix issues:

  • Force-quit the app: Swipe up from bottom, hold TransactionLog, swipe up
  • Restart your iPhone: Power off and back on
  • Update iOS: Go to Settings → General → Software Update
  • Update the app: Open App Store, search TransactionLog, check for updates
  • Clear app cache: Uninstall and reinstall (if you have iCloud backup enabled)
  • Check iCloud sync: Make sure iCloud is on in Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud

If the issue persists after trying these, it's definitely worth reporting!
